VENICE TRANSPORT – VENICE TRANSPORTATION ITALY

Venice Transportation – Because Venice is surrounded by water there is one major means of transportation on the Canals. No cars are allowed on the island and most people get around on foot when wanting to get across dry land. But if you want to move from one area to another – it’s a water bus, or a water taxi for you. Both of these are motorised and make a bit of a racket in the silence of a place with no cars. Water taxis are quite expensive but the Water Buses – there are several lines going different routes and stopping at different stops along the many canals and out in the Lagoon itself. Your first trip as a tourist should be a trip up and down the Grand Canal – what a wonderful way to see all the Palaces lining the Canal. Get a ticket which lasts about 1 and a half hours and go hither and thither for the allowed time. Wonderful. After that just get a water bus to get to whereever you want, Murano, the Lido, St Marks Square and so on.

Travel Guide

Your best bet is to get a one day ticket and this you can buy in any of the small tobacconist shops. Three day passes are also available.

You can also get a Gondola to get around but this is a trip which should be reserved for a special occasion as it is almost €100 for a Gondola to yourself. Be sure and discuss the route, time and cost – before you set out.

Buses and Trains run on the mainland and most buses are from Piazzale Roma and trains from Santa Lucia.
